5.18 International Museum Day | Top 10 National Museum Display and Exhibition Excellence in 2020 Unveiled

The annual ‘5.18 International Museum Day’ has come and gone. This year is the 45th International Museum Day, with the theme of ‘The Future of Museums: Restoration and Reinvention’. The theme is ‘The Future of Museums: Restoration and Reinvention’, which focuses on how museums can start new thinking, explore new modes, and put forward new programs in the face of future social, economic, and environmental challenges in the post-pandemic era. One of the highlights of this year's exhibition is ‘Wannian Yongbao: Achievements in the Conservation of Chinese Cultural Relics in Chinese Collections’, which brings together more than 50 pieces of fine artifacts from 23 cultural and museum institutions, including the Palace Museum, Dunhuang Academy, the Capital Museum, and the China Silk Museum.

China officially joined the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1983 and has organized activities related to International Museum Day every year since then. Since 2009, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage (SACH) has been organizing the main venue of the International Museum Day in China, which has been held in Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Nanning, Jinan, Nanjing, Shijiazhuang, Hohhot, Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha and other places for 12 times so far. This year, the main venue will be hosted by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Beijing Municipal People's Government, organized by the China Museum Association and the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage, and co-organized by the Beijing Museum Association, the Capital Museum, and relevant museums in Beijing, with the main venue located in the Capital Museum.

This year's ‘International Museum Day’ China's main venue activities will focus on all aspects of the latest achievements of the development of China's museums, the opening ceremony, in addition to the release of the latest data on China's museums in the previous year, announced the annual ‘Top Ten National Museums Exhibition Excellence’ and ‘National Most Innovative Museums’ promotion results. At the opening ceremony, in addition to releasing the latest data on Chinese museums in the previous year and announcing the annual ‘Top Ten National Museums with the Best Displays and Exhibitions’ and ‘Most Innovative Museums in China’, the program will also launch the ‘New Life of Museums with 5G’, ‘China National Treasure Conference’ and ‘Golden Microphone in Museums’. ‘Golden Microphone into the museum, take you together to read China’ and other activities.

The highlights of this year's International Museum Day: firstly, the launch of the ‘Wannian Yongbao: China's Collection of cultural relics protection achievements exhibition’. This exhibition, jointly sponsored by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Beijing Municipal Government, is not only a complementary exhibition to the ICOM-CC to be held at the same time, but also the theme exhibition of China's main venue for the International Museum Day in 2021, bringing together more than 50 pieces of artifacts from 23 cultural and museum institutions such as the Palace Museum, Dunhuang Academy, Capital Museum and China Silk Museum. ‘Wannian Yongbao: China's Collections of Cultural Relics Protection Achievements exhibition’ is divided into “Wannian, eye, skillful hands, fanghua, Yongbao” five units, in-depth introduction to the collection of cultural relics of the scientific knowledge of the method and protection technology, show the collection of cultural relics of China's protection and restoration of the latest achievements, show the Chinese concept of the protection of cultural relics and show Chinese concept and practice of the protection of cultural relics in the collection. At the same time, the exhibition will join hands with CCTV, Huawei, etc., to explore and strengthen the ‘exhibition + media + technology’ cross-border integration, to provide the general public with interpretation of the exhibition and exhibition experience.

The second main venue is the Beijing Capital Museum, where the State Administration of Cultural Heritage will guide Beijing in promoting the construction of Beijing's ‘City of Museums’, comprehensively improve the level of the museum collection, research, display, education, and dissemination, and promote the establishment of Beijing's museum system with a reasonable layout, optimized structure, distinctive features, full of vitality, and complete functionality, so as to help Beijing's ‘Four Centres’ to achieve its goals.
